Drivers of small city cars, aren’t going short of choice at the moment. Small, economical vehicles that can help drivers side step the worst of the environmental taxation burden are very much in season and if they can do so with some clever design aspects and a splash of cheekiness included, well, so much the better. Hyundais i10 speeds into this arena on the wave of optimism that’s building around the Hyundai models. The car might be lacking the sparkle to seduce the nation’s urban trendies, but it certainly puts a  tick in the boxes for value for money, build quality, practicality and and I’d certainly be seen alive in one!

Inoffensive rather than outstanding, the i30 isn’t going to rocket to the top of the sales charts dislodging the Focus and sending Volkswagen’s Golf back to the drawing board but it’s more competitive than any Hyundai cars before it alongside comparatively priced models from the likes of Toyota, Citroen, Mazda and Renault. Strong points include build quality, comfort and interior space while an injection of performance and design flare wouldn’t go amiss.

You need look no further than the Santa Fe 4×4 for evidence of Hyundai’s ambition. This is a good-looking and fine handling off-roader with a practical interior that gains an extra dimension when specified with seven seats. The prices reflect the Santa Fe’s step up market and it is tough to fault.

In the MPV range, Hyundai is reknown for practicalityso there are many curvier MPVs around than the i800. A sleek silhouette however is no substitute for acres of space, especially if you’ve got a big family. The Hyundai i800 isn’t the most sophisticated but at over 5.1 metres long, it is very large and can seat eight and still have room for luggage

A large Korean saloon doesn’t feature prominently on most executive car shopping lists but Hyundai’s Sonata is worthy of consideration. It looks a more European affair and with the diesel engine installed, it represents a very cost driven choice.
