Photo Safari Must-See – Amboseli
Thursday, May 6th, 2010An African Photo Safari isn’t complete without a visit to Amboseli.
Amboseli National Park offers one of the most fantastic and breathtaking sights of Kenya, with Mount Kilimanjaro (in Tanzania) as the back drop. At 18,652 feet above sea level, Kilimanjaro dominates the plains like a powerful god ruling the world from his lofty throne. In fact, ancient Swahili and Arab legends speak of a impressive inland mountain with a terrifying god dwelling at the top. As consequence for anybody daring to approach his throne, he would paralyze their feet and hands. Interesting how people of tropical regions described getting frostbite. Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania but the most impressive view is from Amboseli National Park.
Amboseli gets an abundant amount of water year round, it’s just flowing subterranean. The snows of Kilimanjaro melt, soaking into the permeable subsoil layers of volcanic rocks. The aquifers percolate to the surface forming two clear springs in the center of the park. Water also oozes up at many other points in the park creating large marshes like the Loginya Swamp. These marshes and swamps have become exclusive watering holes for elephants, hippos and buffaloes.
Several Kenia Safaris go to Amboseli. So when you’re deciding on a safari outfit, you must also take into consideration other features of the safari, including number of photographers per jeep, accommodations and lodging, and price.
