Surprisingly, the topic of weddings is a very large and diverse history and background. It never really occurs to the majority of people that a topic like this could be so rife with things amusing, interesting and, inspirational.
Many of todays wedding ceremonies are nothing like would be seen a couple of decades ago. We are all familiar with the “normal” way that weddings are usually handled, but there is such diversity now days, particularly in the last 10 to 15 years. There are now people that look at weddings unlike they ever have before, and it can be seen in the wedding ceremony. To illustrate, While perusing the internet the other day, I ran across an article about a couple who were married at 1 Mile above sea level – in a hot air balloon.
The values of people have changed to the extent that the wedding itself has morphed into something much different than in the past. The familiar solicitation by the family preacher of the words ’til death do us part’ was the substance of nearly every wedding ceremony. In the present day, marriages are often referred to as “civil unions” because they are accomplished outside of the traditional Church environment. It was rarely considered that a couple would prepare their own wedding vows, but today all of that has changed and has become fairly commonplace. Sometimes these are quite romantic, or inspirational and in the spirit of the traditional wedding. In fact, one may wonder if there is really a life time commitment being forged at all. One recent example is of a wedding vow between wife and Gov Mark Sanford that illustrates the point: “technically, he never promised wife Jenny that he’d be faithful, in fact, he cut fidelity out of their wedding vows.”
It makes you wonder what a woman would think in a situation like that.
Any study of Weddings would be incomplete without considering cultural influences. For example, Some tribal countries call for a man to demonstrate his ability to provide for and protect his family.
Additionally, there are some customs that we just take for granted, the historical background of which most certainly surprise you. One interesting throwback is the bridal shower, where it is thought to have derived in the case of a young bride-to-be who had no dowery. Her friends would “Shower” her with gifts to make up for where she was lacking.
These are all interesting tidbits, but there is more. Even wedding flower arrangements are affected by custom.
